Vikings Thin At WR and CB

Thursday, September 16th, 2010

The Vikings are going to Miami without having made any of my expected roster moves.

I would have thought at least one of the three would have happened:

  • Sign former Packer WR Ruvell Martin
  • Re-sign Javon Walker
  • Pick up a free agent cornerback

Surprising that none of those moves were made.  I think with the addition of Camarillo, we’re going to be fine at WR, at least until week 5 when we play the Jets (or even week 6 vs. Dallas).  However, the cornerback position is dangerously thin (only 3 starters?!?!).

The talent available for the Vikings’ needs must not have been adequate – that is the only explanation.  There is no way management could not be thinking about getting help in those areas.  I do think that now is the time to snatch up talent from another team’s practice squad before other teams start having injuries and thinking about doing the same.

I’m still thinking Miami shouldn’t be too tough to get a win at.  We should be 1-1 on Monday.

Despite record, Vikings Still Strongest In NFC North

Monday, September 13th, 2010

So the Vikings lost their first game to the Super Bowl champs.  Big deal.  They still looked pretty good doing it, and once Favre shakes off the rust from having skipped training camp, the strength of this team will really begin to take hold.  If you’re being honest, the game really could have gone either way, and there is no question that at least the New Orleans Saints are still one of the best teams in the league.  Does that not put the Vikings in the same category?

While it does appear as if the Vikings’ receiving corps is weak and depleted at the moment, Camarillo has shown much promise and looks to be a solid receiver.  Favre threw some lousy throws last Thursday, but so did several others of the NFL’s “Elite” quarterbacks this weekend.  He didn’t have a terrible game, despite taking credit for the loss.

What does need to improve is the coaching staff’s decision making and offensive play-calling.  Why Chilly abandoned the running game almost entirely in the second half last Thursday is beyond me.  Our quarterback is great, but is also old and has been known to throw away games almost as often as win them.  Take some of the burden of responsibility to single-handedly put points on the board, and utilize a guy we have on the roster named Adrian Peterson to do some of the work.  Oh yeah, and he just happens to be one of, if not the best running back in the league.

The Lions and Bears both looked pathetic yesterday…both of them should be pushovers.  And while the Packers did manage a win against a pretty good team in the Philadelphia Eagles, they certainly showed a number of weaknesses yesterday.  Rodgers was not as perfect as all the analysts have proclaimed him to be, their offensive line did cave in a few times, and their offense was basically reduced to nothing in the second half.  When we do play the Packers though, we will have to focus on keeping #52 Clay Matthews away from our QB.  That guy scares me.

All in all I think the Vikings have a very solid team again this year and should come out on top of the division once again.  Bring on the Dolphins!

Final Preseason Game Tonight

Thursday, September 2nd, 2010

Tonight is the final preseason game for the Vikings, and then we’ll await the news of who will not make the team.

Will we see a little bit of Camarillo’s and Walker’s abilities tonight?

From what we’ve see so far, who do you suspect will make the team and who will not?

If there is a position the Vikes still need some help in, what would it be?  Cornerback?  Backup running back?

Proof the Vikings and Vikings fans are better than the Packers and Packer fans

Tuesday, August 24th, 2010

Yes, I am a Viking’s fan so the thought of a headline like this shouldn’t surprise many of you. But when a logical person thinks about it, in many ways it must be true. Everytime we sign a washed up Packer, they end up having a career year and their careers continue to advance. Ryan Longwell, Darren Sharper, Brett Favre, and now Javon Walker. Kind of makes you wonder if the Packers may be talent killers. Now, I know there are those out there that will protest and say the Packers have won 3 Super Bowls while the Vikings have not won any. That’s true and as much as I would like to change it, I cannot. This fact proves that Vikings fans are better than Packer fans. It’s easy to cheer for a team that has previously won it all, why else do you think the Steelers have such a following? No, Vikings fans suffer together and it makes us stronger. Sure, winning it all last year would have felt good, but it would have made us complacent. The loss kept us hungry, and hunger lets you know you are alive.

For Real

Sunday, November 1st, 2009

This team is for real. Eight games into a Super Bowl season. Seven wins and one loss, and in that one loss they outplayed the other team. Most complete team in the NFC by far. New Orleans has looked good, but they lack the weapons at every position that the Vikings have. Brett Favre, beast, Adrian Petereson, beast, Percy Havin, beast, Sidney Rice, beast, Jared Allen, BEAST. The bye week is well timed. Allows a couple key pieces to heal up, Antoine for one, and lets the other pieces rest up for a title run. Coming out of the bye, the Vikings have a very favorable schedule. With the win today, they likely need three wins (one against the Bears) to win the division. Then it’s a race for first round bye and home field advantage. This is the most exciting season of Vikings football in a decade and I plan to cherish every moment of it. SKOL!

Mission Miami

Sunday, September 13th, 2009

One game done, one game won. After much anticipation we finally got to see Favre lead the Vikings. That is exactly what he did today. He led the Vikings. He didn’t make exceptional plays or take over the game, instead he led.The Vikings struggled to move the ball early against a suspect defense but it was more to do with play calling than anything. It wasn’t until the second half that it looked like Favre was finally given the keys to the car. He audibled on a couple occasions, and both should have been touchdown passes, one was a pass interference that set up a touchdown. The only criticism is that he got sacked four times, which is probably due to the offensive line, but he held onto the ball too long in those occasions.Adrian Peterson was awesome again. He also struggled early, apparently due to conditioning, but was unstoppable late. His last touchdown run was sick. If Adrian Peterson runs that well all season 2000 yards will be an afterthought at week 10 and people will wonder if 3000 is possible.Week one leaves Vikings fans with much to celebrate. An efficient win, a quarterback that managed the game effectively, and a running back that is unstoppable. With Detroit next week, put 2-0 in the books.
